In 2002, Dominicans were able to bring issues of justice and peace to members of the international community at the UN Commission on Human Rights in March-April 2002 and at the UN Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in August 2002. A number of Dominicans were present in Geneva to give witness and to testify before the international community at meetings of the highest UN bodies responsible for the promotion and protection of human rights worldwide.

The UN Commission on Human Rights is considered “the central architect of the work of the United Nations in the field of human rights,” according to Mary Robinson, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (1997-2002).

The delegation at the 2002 UN Sub-Commission on Promotion and Protection of Human Rights included Philippe LeBlanc, OP (Canada), Marie Laure Dénès, OP (France), Pablo Romo, OP (Mexico), Joâo Xerri, OP (Malta), Christina Tomes, (USA), Alessandra Aula (Italy) and interns from the Geneva Office.
