Declaration to the 40th session of the Human Rights Council

Item 6 – UPR outcomes on Mexico

Geneva – 14th of March 2019

Thank you, Mr. President,

We appreciate Mexico's participation in the UPR, and acknowledge the government's acceptance of the many recommendations and its willingness to implement them. We also welcome the government's commitment to improve access to justice and to strengthen the fight against impunity.

However, concerning the issues referred to in the recommendations[1] regarding the recognition and safeguarding of the important role of human rights defenders and their organizations in defending the rights of the most vulnerable individuals and groups, we believe that, in the current context of the country, there is a need for effective, participatory and respectful collaboration between the State and its institutions and human rights defenders and their organizations. It is of utmost importance that the State acknowledge their work and their ways of defining and ensuring respect for human rights.

We reaffirm that it is crucial for the Government to establish a frank and proactive dialogue with civil society organizations in order to create an environment conducive to the defense, protection and promotion of human rights, recognizing also their historical contribution in cultivating respect for human rights and in the democratization of the country.

Thank you, Mr. President.
