The full recognition of the rights of women is still a goal to be achieved. We keep this in mind as we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and all that has been done to improve the lives of millions of people on the basis of this great document.
Amartya Sen, the Nobel Prize-winning economist, has written of the "100 milion missing women", those who have lost their lives through discrimination both before and after birth.
The conference "Women and Human Rights" is therefore a celebration that also highlights the ongoing problems that women face. The questions of the danger that relativistic thinking poses for the future of human rights, the role of religion in defending women's rights will be at the heart of this conference, with the active participation of Dominican sisters involved in defending human rights practically.
