Title: Awareness Raising on Climate Change and Human Rights among Youth in the Amazon

Rainforests around the world play a vital role in the climate crisis by acting as critical carbon sinks. The Amazon is a key regulator of the planet’s climate system, yet it’s increasingly under threats.

“The Amazon is under siege like never before” WWF expresses with deep concern. Looking ahead, the global demand for critical minerals essential for the energy transition is expected to surge dramatically, and the Amazon holds a significant share of these resources. The Amazon region is particularly vulnerable, as studies show that deforestation and climate change are pushing it toward a drier state, risking massive tree dieback and the release of significant amounts of carbon dioxide, further accelerating global warming. Indigenous populations, who are dependent on the symbiotic relationship with nature for their survival, increasingly experience the pressure on their environment due to abusive exploitation of natural resources. And this challenge is exacerbated by climate change. As the Amazon faces escalating environmental challenges, its young generations will bear the brunt of the climate crisis.

At the same time, they will be at the forefront of the fight to preserve this vital rainforest, which is indispensable for maintaining global ecological balance. Widespread and intentional awareness-raising efforts will be crucial to strengthen their understanding and engagement in addressing these issues. Expected outcome: Through a participate process involving various partners in the region, the project will promote awareness-raising among the youth starting with the educational institutions by providing an innovative tool that will have practical utility within and outside schools in Peru, Venezuela, and Brazil.

Outputs:

1. A core group with members of the Dominican family and their networks in the project implementation countries will be established and trained to oversee

the implementation and coordination of the project.

2. An educational tool on Climate Change and Human Rights will be produced in Spanish and Portuguese for awareness-raising and advocacy in the target

countries. It will be designed to complement any existing material on climate change awareness in the region. It will feature a core content framework

applicable across the target countries, complemented by annexes customized for each country’s unique context.

3. A secretariat will be created for the project in each target country to monitor the use of the educational tool. It will also be responsible for collecting case

studies, conducting safeguarding visits, and identifying innovative actions.

4. An official launch of the tool will take place in one of the target countries and will be followed by the first training on the tool’s specific use for teachers

and school administrators. Representatives from other target countries will also attend. In subsequent years, relaunch events and trainings will be held in the

other target countries.

5. International and national advocacy will be undertaken to ensure a more global awareness of the issues touched by the project in the field of climate

change and human rights.
