CLIMATE CHANGE AND HUMAN RIGHTS EDUCATION FOR YOUTH IN THE PHILIPPINES

“Climate Change and Human Rights Education for Youth in the Philippines” (CCHRE) is a handbook designed to assist school administrators and teachers in demonstrating to students how climate change is a human rights concern. It comprises six chapters that delve deeply into the intricate relationship between climate change and human rights. This publication is intended to inspire school administrators and teachers to empower students as proactive agents of positive change.

Annex A provides a matrix outlining the content lessons and learning competencies relevant for integrating climate change and human rights from Grades 3–10 across four identified core subjects: EPP/TLE, MAPEH, Science and Social Studies.

Annex B provides examples of exercises that can guide educators in effectively mainstreaming climate change and human rights in core subjects and corresponding lessons. The exercises are designed to empower teachers in delivering impactful and informed education.

Annex C encourages school administrators and teachers to collaborate with the Commission on Human Rights and also provides a non-exhaustive list of climate, human rights, and environmental organisations in the Philippines with which schools can build partnerships for advocacy activities, initiatives, and programs.

“It is my hope that school administrators, teachers, and students see this as a life subject. By empowering our children to recognise that, we hope that they themselves will work together to diminish the human impact of climate change.”
Fr. Aniedi Okure, OP
